Director of Software Engineering



AbleVets, LLC, is a fast-growing Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) providing healthcare information technology services and resources to help the VA and DoD improve the lives of the people they serve. AbleVets has an opportunity for an experienced, motivated Director of Software Engineering to support healthcare information technology projects for our customers. This position is located in our Chantilly, VA office.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance for a variety of development projects, including web and mobile health applications. The Software Engineering Manager will develop and implement best practices for full system lifecycle development including the analysis, planning, implementation, testing, documentation, and operations. Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Implementing security standards within development process
  • Understanding of Greenfield and Brownfield startup challenges and mitigating approaches
  • Leading automated test design and implementation
  • Leading high-functioning Kanban/Scrum teams
  • Leading Retrospectives and producing actionable results
  • Driving tactical delivery for multiple teams
  • Working with business partners, architects, and other groups to identify technical and functional needs of systems, and determine priority of needs
  • Ensuring adherence to defined development life cycle, good software design practices, and Architecture strategy and intent
  • Making key system design and integration decisions and for communicating decisions to individuals implementing the system
  • Providing bench strength by building, developing, and leading a high-performing team 
  • Developing software skills of their engineering team by personally training and mentoring team members
  • Providing strategic leadership for the engineering teams, creating and driving organizational initiatives and departmental goals
  • Monitoring levels of production, departmental turnaround times, and overall processes/procedures
  • Interacting with clients in a collaborative way to understand what they really need and drive change in their team to meet those needs


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or related technical discipline; 8 additional years of relevant experience may be substituted for education requirement
  • 10 years of experience in software development
  • Minimum of 5 years of technical leadership of complex projects
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented and domain-driven development principles
  • 4 years of hands on experience with Agile methodologies
  • 4+ years of experience developing technical architecture
  • Must have the ability to deliver strong results in a fast paced, dynamic team environment
  • Self-starter that can work independently under general direction
  • Must be a “team player” and have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • This position may support a government contract and have access to classified or government protected information for which US citizenship is required
  • Ability to obtain a public trust

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with Oracle, MongoDB, MySQL or SQL Server a plus
  • Fluency in a variety of technologies, such as C, C++, C#, Silverlight, Python, OpenGL, WPF, Ruby, Java, or Xcode (Full Stack developer)
  • Familiarity with DevOps stack technologies for software engineering, such as Jenkins, Docker, etc.
  • Experience designing and delivering microservices
  • Experience designing and delivering native iOS and Android applications
  • Experience with Swagger
