AbleVets, LLC is a fast growing Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) providing healthcare information technology services and resources to help the VA and DoD improve the lives of the people they serve. AbleVets has an opportunity available for an experienced energetic, motivated, product owner to support healthcare information technology projects for our customers. The product owner is responsible for participating in the full agile application development life cycle for new development design, construction and testing of reusable components to support overall project objectives.  The product owner must have experience working with customers, users and project leads in analyzing, designing, implementing and supporting IT business applications and systems. The successful candidate has primary responsibility for individual projects and systems. They must possess strong communications skills, and have a passion for constantly improving the individual and team effectiveness. This position is located in our Chantilly, VA office.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

This position is for a product owner to work in a fast-paced, Agile environment. The Product Owner will manage the enterprise backlog, delivering features, agile requirements, the events within SAFe, and perform stakeholder management. Understand customer needs and validate solutions, develop and communicate the program vision, roadmap and backlog, manage and prioritize the flow of work, define releases and Program Increments and participate in the Program Increment planning, participate in demonstrations, reviews and accepts stories. Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the customer and stakeholders to understand and fulfill the product vision and roadmap.
  • Be responsible for conveying Customer requirements to the Scrum team by refining the backlog based on business value.
  • Be accountable for the independent delivery of value to customers and stakeholders by ensuring that the right product is defined, prioritized, and built.
  • Act as the custodian (caretaker) of the product roadmap and vision by helping to shape and refine them
  • Participate in the development of story acceptance criteria,
  • Approve and prioritize user stories for the backlog
  • Proactively manage and prioritize the product, release, and sprint backlogs according to business value, complexity, and expectations
  • Provide business leadership for the Scrum team by understanding and executing the product goals and vision
  • Collaborate with the Scrum team to prioritize, plan, and release working product increments
  • Keep stakeholders involved by gathering input and communicating progress.
  • Collect and analyze usability studies, market research, and user feedback to identify and recommend product enhancements and opportunities
  • Ensure the completeness and accuracy of product backlog items for the Scrum team by creating clear and thoughtful documentation
  • Participate in the Sprint Planning, Team Demo’s and Retrospective meetings.
  • Contribute to the success of the Scrum team by being an active participant in all Scrum ceremonies
  • Respect and empower the Scrum team’s ability to create its own plan of action each sprint while protecting the team



  • Bachelor's Degree and miniumum of 10 years of experience.  Eight (8) years' experience may be substituted for degree.
  • 5+ years’ experience developing/testing software using the Agile/Scrum methodology
  • Experience leading large software development programs involving multiple scrum teams
  • Strong time management, prioritization and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize strong leadership skills to provide guidance, influence and direction
  • Ability to translate metrics into business decisions of importance and priorities
  • Previous success as a member of a Product Management organization
  • Direct hands on experience with writing user stories, grooming backlogs, and coordinating/prioritizing conflicting requirements
  • Must be a “team player” and have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • This position may support a government contract and have access to classified or government protected information for which US citizenship is required
  • Ability to obtain a public trust

Desired Qualifications:

  • Solid experience in supporting clinical dev technology and information systems, projects and processes with
  • Knowledge / experience with EHR / Hospital appointment scheduling workflows
  • CSM and/or CSPO certification
  • Experience with Healthcare IT Projects
  • Experience with Agile development tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Rally, etc.
  • Experience with online collaboration tools such as O365, Google Docs, etc.
  • Thorough understanding and proven delivery experience within a Scrum/agile project lifecycle approach to software development
