  • Overview

    AbleVets, LLC is a fast-growing Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) providing healthcare information technology services and resources to help the Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) improve the lives of the people they serve. AbleVets has an opportunity available for an experienced Back End Developer. The successful candidate will provide engineering and development services in an Agile environment to enable integration and data exchange for the VA healthcare information system. This position is located in our Chantilly, VA office.

    Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities

    • Develop stable, scalable back-end code in support of customer requirements using 12-factor app guiding principles
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide a technical solution compliant with the design and interface definitions
    • Participate in new development starting with requirements analysis and design, provide estimates during sprint planning
    • Coordinate with front-end engineers to understand and levy requirements of the front-end application
    • Implement test-driven development methods, supporting an end to end testing
    • Provide story point estimates for enhancements and new features
    • Create documentation throughout the software development life cycle (SDLC)
    • Utilize Rational to create, update, and track current development tasks
    • Refine user requirements and identify areas for enhancement
    • Revise, update, refactor and debug code


    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electronics engineering, or other technical discipline and at least five (5) years of related experience. An additional six (6) years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.
    • Experience supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other Federal Government Agency is required
    • Familiar with an Agile incremental delivery approach which supports the incremental development of high-quality, fully tested application component delivery in a timely fashion
    • Demonstrated experience performing back-end development using MUMPS
    • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
    • Self-starter that can work under general direction in a highly collaborative, team-based environment
    • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance

    Preferred / Desired Skills:

    • Master’s degree in the associated technical field
    • Previous Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) experience, specifically within Health Information Technology (HIT) areas
    • Prior experience with AMPL
    • Knowledge of Agile frameworks and regression testing
    • Current security clearance and GFE is a plus
